Yoga Speak Explained: "the full expression of the pose"

Writer's picture: Always YogaAlways Yoga

Have you ever heard a teacher refer to the "full expression of a pose"?

How did it make you feel? Good, if you could do it? Not so good, if you couldn't?

Spoiler alert: there are no "full" ways to practice a posture, just as there are no "incomplete" ways to practice a posture.

When you hear this, it often will mean that you have an opportunity to work into a deeper or more complicated version of a posture. But, we know that this doesn't make a pose 'full' or 'complete.' It just makes it different.

There are many reasons why a person may choose to not take an "advanced" variation

of a posture:

  • They may be working with an injury or physical limitation

  • It may simply not feel good to move or force their body into that shape

  • They may be feeling tired, emotionally or physically drained

  • They may simply prefer another variation

You can't be practicing yoga less than someone just because you're not choosing the 'fullest expression of the pose'.

The fullest expression of a pose is the version of it that feels most beneficial and medicinal to you, and that will be unique for everybody.

“You are the salt that adds flavour to the earth, and the whole universe is waiting to savour your uniqueness.” - Michael Bassey Johnson
