dṛṣṭi [ drish-tee ] = point of focus
Drishti refers to using the gaze in yogic practice. Gazing at a particular point can aid in focus, concentration, direction of energy and sense withdrawal.
Drishti is a point on which to focus, used in meditation, pranayama and asana.
nasagra drishti - tip of the nose
hasta drishti - hand
nabhi chakra drishti - naval
urdhva drishti - upward
angusthamadhye drishti - thumbs
Drishti is often used as a way to stay focused, to keep balance and to keep the mind from wandering. It can also be used as an alignment cue:
In virabhadrasana II (warrior 2), you will often be told to gaze over your front hand - this is drishti.
